My SEO Content Process: From Audit to Ranking Page

Every client asks some version of the same question early on: "how do you actually decide what to write?" The honest answer is that writing is the last step, not the first. Here's the process that gets a page there.

1. Audit before anything gets written

Before drafting a single sentence, I look at what's already indexed, what's ranking for adjacent terms, and where the technical foundation has gaps, broken redirects, thin pages, missing schema, orphaned content with no internal links pointing to it. Writing on top of a broken foundation wastes the writing.

2. Map search intent, not just keywords

A keyword list tells you what people type. It doesn't tell you what they actually want when they type it. Someone searching "best marine fish for beginners" wants a buying guide, not a taxonomy lecture, someone searching "marine fish disease symptoms" wants a diagnostic reference. Matching content format to intent matters more than hitting a keyword density target.

3. Build the architecture before the individual pages

Individual blog posts rarely rank well in isolation. A content silo, a cluster of related pages linking to and from a central pillar page, tends to outperform scattered individual posts, because it signals topical depth to search engines rather than one-off coverage.

4. Write for the reader first, structure for the crawler second

  1. Draft the page as if explaining it to someone who knows nothing about the topic
  2. Then restructure with headers, short paragraphs, and scannable formatting
  3. Then check the technical layer: title tag, meta description, slug, internal links, schema

Doing this in reverse, optimizing before the content is genuinely useful, tends to produce pages that rank briefly and then slide, since search engines increasingly reward content that actually satisfies the reader, not just the algorithm.

5. Measure, then revise

A page published is a hypothesis, not a finished product. Search Console data, time on page, and actual ranking movement over 4 to 8 weeks tell you whether the intent match was correct. Content strategy that doesn't loop back to real data is just guessing with extra steps.
