Life has a funny way of guiding you down unexpected paths. My journey from dentistry to SEO might sound like a complete 180-degree turn, but when I look back, it feels like the most natural progression. From clinical practice and teaching for 15 years to diving into the world of digital marketing and freelancing, it’s been an exciting adventure, filled with growth, challenges, and a whole lot of learning.
The Beginning: A Dentist at Heart
My story began in 2004 when I completed my degree in dentistry. I’ve always had a passion for helping people, and dentistry seemed like the perfect career choice. There’s something incredibly rewarding about being able to fix someone’s smile or alleviate their pain. For over 15 years, I worked in various clinical settings, and I was also involved in teaching. It was a fulfilling career, but over time, I felt that there was something more I wanted to explore.
The world of dentistry was fantastic, but I realized that I craved a new challenge, something that would allow me to leverage my skills in a different way. It wasn’t long before I stumbled upon digital marketing, and more specifically, SEO.
The Shift: A Leap into Digital Marketing
In the early stages, the idea of shifting careers was intimidating. How could someone with a background in healthcare transition into the digital world? But I was always one to embrace new challenges, so I decided to take the plunge.
I enrolled in a digital marketing certificate course at the Institute of Digital Marketing Karachi. The moment I started learning about SEO, content writing, and the intricacies of online marketing, it was like a switch went off in my head. The world of digital marketing felt as dynamic and exciting as the world of healthcare. The beauty of digital marketing is that it’s constantly evolving—there’s always something new to learn, new techniques to master, and new opportunities to explore.
GediTag: The First Step into SEO and Content Writing
After completing my digital marketing course, I landed my first job at GediTag, a Karachi-based company. Here, I got my first taste of what it meant to work in the digital world. I was involved in SEO, blog writing, content creation, and optimization—tasks that I had only read about in theory.
At GediTag, I was able to apply the skills I had learned in my digital marketing course and start making a tangible impact. Optimizing websites, crafting engaging blog posts, and refining content to make it more SEO-friendly were just the beginning. The real magic of SEO came when I saw the results of my efforts—seeing a website's ranking climb or a blog post drive traffic was incredibly rewarding. It made me feel like I was doing more than just optimizing keywords; I was helping businesses grow, reaching new audiences, and making a difference in a space I never imagined I would be part of.
Learning on the Job: SEO and Content Writing
One of the most exciting parts of this transition was the learning curve. SEO isn’t something you can master overnight. It’s a blend of creativity, data analysis, and technical knowledge. I started to dive deep into how search engines work, understanding algorithms, and learning the art of keyword research. It was a challenging yet thrilling experience—much like dentistry in that sense. The more you practice, the better you get.
Blog writing was another area I grew in. I had always enjoyed writing, but SEO blogging was an entirely new challenge. It wasn’t just about writing well; it was about writing in a way that resonated with both the reader and search engines. I learned how to craft content that was not only informative and engaging but also optimized for keywords, user experience, and mobile-friendliness.
Freelancing: The Freedom to Be My Own Boss
After spending some time at GediTag, I felt ready to take the next step in my career. I decided to venture into freelancing, where I could combine my newfound passion for SEO and content writing with the flexibility to choose my projects and work from anywhere.
Freelancing has been an incredibly fulfilling experience. It allowed me to take everything I had learned and apply it to a wide range of projects. Whether it’s helping a small business grow its online presence or working on content strategies for larger companies, freelancing has given me the freedom to work on projects that excite me. The best part? I get to do it from the comfort of my own home (or coffee shop, when I’m feeling adventurous).
One of the things I love most about freelancing is the variety of work. Every project is different, and each one presents its own unique challenges. I get to work with clients from different industries, which keeps things fresh and exciting. Whether I’m optimizing a website, writing SEO-friendly blog posts, or diving into the technical aspects of digital marketing, there’s never a dull moment.
Skills I Gained Along the Way
What I’ve learned through my journey is that the skills I developed as a dentist and teacher have helped me in unexpected ways in my SEO and digital marketing career.
Attention to Detail: As a dentist, I had to pay close attention to every detail, whether it was in a patient’s treatment or in the classroom. This skill has transferred over to SEO, where even the smallest details—like keyword placement, meta tags, or internal linking—can make a big difference.
Communication: Teaching required me to explain complex topics in a simple, understandable way. In the same way, SEO and content writing require clear, effective communication—whether it's conveying technical SEO concepts to clients or writing content that engages readers.
Patience and Persistence: Both dentistry and SEO require patience. In dentistry, results take time, and the same is true for SEO. Building organic traffic, improving rankings, and seeing the fruits of your labor take time, but when it happens, it’s incredibly rewarding.
Looking Ahead: The Future of SEO and My Career
As I continue on this journey of freelancing and SEO, I’m excited about the endless possibilities. Digital marketing is an ever-evolving field, and SEO is at the heart of it all. With advancements in AI, voice search, and changing algorithms, there’s always something new to learn.
For me, this career change has been one of the most fulfilling decisions I’ve made. It’s been a journey of self-discovery, growth, and constant learning. From working in a clinic to working online as an SEO expert, I’ve learned that it’s never too late to start something new, and it’s never too late to chase your passion—no matter where life takes you.
Final Thoughts
If you’re someone who’s considering a career change or thinking about diving into digital marketing, my advice is simple: Go for it. The journey may seem daunting at first, but with hard work, persistence, and a willingness to learn, anything is possible. Just like I transitioned from dentistry to SEO, you too can make a shift, pursue new interests, and build a fulfilling career in an exciting, ever-growing field.
